Decorating on a budget requires a bit of creativity and ingenuity, but it is definitely possible to achieve the look you want without breaking the bank.

Quick Fixes

One way to change up the look of your home is by adding new wall art. You can find affordable pieces at stores like the Dollar Store, Family Dollar and thrift stores. Or, if you are feeling crafty, you can create your own artwork using items that you already have around the house. Another great way to spruce up your home is by rearranging your furniture. This can give any room a whole new look and feel. And it's free!

Paint

One of the simplest and most effective ways to spruce up your home is with a fresh coat of paint. Whether you go for a bold accent wall or simply repaint all of the rooms in your home, painting is an easy and relatively inexpensive way to give your space a facelift. If you are feeling really thrifty, you can even try painting some old furniture to give it new life. I always recommend touching up the painted areas that have gotten worn or giving it an entirely fresh coat of a slightly brighter color to freshen up a room once a year. It’s amazing what a little bit of paint can do to transform an entire space!

Thrift Stores & Garage Sales

Another great way to decorate on a budget is by shopping at thrift stores and garage sales. You would be surprised at the hidden gems you can find at these places. Often, you can find great items with tons of character for a fraction of the cost that you'd pay brand new. With a little love those pieces can become characters in your home that add special touches. With a little bit of elbow grease, you can easily turn an old piece of furniture into something new and stylish as well. Just be sure to measure twice before you buy anything so that it will fit in your space properly and not wind up in a junk pile.

A note of caution here: Before you buy anything, make sure you have a specific purpose for it and not just an "I might use this someday..." otherwise, we both know it will end up in a clutter pile collecting dust. Have a purpose and be intentional about your finds and all will be well.

Place a few colorful throw pillows on your couch

Seriously, it is a SUCH a simple way to breathe new life into an area and switch up the energy in a room. These can get pricey, so I love being on the lookout for Clearance sales on pillows, or finding them at that good old discount store. Keep an eye out on the prices in your area and snatch some up when you find a good deal. You can also always recover them with fabric too!

Any time you are ready for a change or if your older ones are looking worn, find some fabric you love and get someone skilled to cover them for you. A better idea is swapping with your favorite seamstress, maybe some homemade treats or offering to help them around their house to save even more money and create a valuable barter.

Hang a curtain rod and add some sheer curtains

Curtain rods can be pretty inexpensive depending on where you shop. Resist the urge to go to the fancy home decorating store, but instead, price compare at discount stores. You don't need fancy for a curtain rod. I've found some great deals at the dollar stores for both curtain rods and curtains. Sheer curtains add a little elegance and softness to a room for a small investment. A bonus here would be to grab some LED string lights and drape them behind the sheer curtains for a magical touch.

Buy a new area rug

Now, I will admit that these can get pretty pricey. Some, outrageously so. Personally, I have a hard time paying full price for a rug that will just get dirty and stained with my kids' outdoor adventures. So, I always shop discount for these and you can too. Again, dollar stores are my top choice, or bargain stores like Ross where you can find the same quality and style for much less than fancier stores. Also, wait to shop the Clearance or sales. You can always ask a store manager when they will be putting their home decorating items on sale to get new items. It doesn't hurt to ask! If you have kids, definitely look at a rug that can handle wear and tear better and hide the dirt. We love our dark blue shag-like area rug for the kids that is soft and also masks dirty hands, feet and crumbs.

Use plants to decorate - they're cheap and can improve air quality

Not only are plants a great way to decorate on a budget, but they can also improve the air quality in your home. They act as natural humidifiers and can help purify the air. So if you or your family members have allergies or asthma, plants could be a great addition to your home. Some of the best plants for purifying the air are Aloe Vera, Boston Ferns, English Ivy, Bamboo Palm, Spider Plants, Philodendron and Peace Lilies.

Repurpose What You Already Have & Love

Lastly, don't forget about personalizing your space with things that are meaningful to you and your family. Look at repurposing what you already have. Check out some ideas for an old chair or mug on Pinterest and find new ways to love it in your home. Adding photos or mementos from special occasions is a great way to make your house feel like a home and change up the scenery. So get creative and have fun decorating! Your wallet will thank you later.

So there you have it, a few easy and budget-friendly ways to decorate your home and freshen it up. Give one or all of these ideas a try and see how they transform your space. You may be surprised at just how much of a difference a few small changes can make.
